A group of learners from Longsight Training Centre volunteered for a charity fundraising project on Saturday 16 December.
Sarah Daniels, Work Placement Consultant at Longsight, started working with a national Charity, Dreams Come True, after reading about their work in an article. The charity funds projects for young people and children living with serious medical conditions; they “make dreams come true” for individuals they support, e.g. meeting a celebrity, go on a dream holiday, get special equipment, etc.
From 10am on Saturday 16 December, learners from Longsight and two from Stockport Training Centre worked on the checkouts over the day, packing customers’ shopping and collecting donations. Learners wore a Dreams Come True t-shirt and all had been prepared with bag-packing skills and a script to help them get into the swing of things!
Some learners enjoyed engaging with the general public, some benefited from confidence building and developing communication skills – but all did exceptionally well, there were smiles all round, all day! All of them enjoyed the day, with a couple even staying an extra hour just because they were having such a good time. The learners raised an amazing total of £328 for Dreams Come True.
